Dam Square is the center of the city of Amsterdam and was built during the 13th century after the Amstel river was dammed. It is located where Damrak street becomes Rokin about a 5 minutes walk south of Central Station. This open square stays busy and offers various attractions throughout the year - In the winter there may be an ice skating rink and Ollie Ball stands while warmer seasons may offer carnivals or street performers. No matter what else is going on, there is never a shortage of pigeons and many people enjoy feeding them. The National Memorial, which commemorates Dutch soldiers and resistance members who died during WWII, is also located in Dam Square. Surrounding the square are several other attractions including the Royal Palace, Nieuwkerk (New Church), a wax museum, shopping, restaurants, and more. There is no way you will be in Amsterdam and not wind up at Dam Square at some point. The city is pretty good about having something of interest going on in the square, especially in the warmer months. It can get pretty crowded down there.
