Cave Tubing
Cave tubing has become a very popular activity in Belize. The caves are located at the Caves Branch Archaeological Site about a 1 hour drive from Belize City.

To get to the launching point, you will take a short 45 minute walk through the jungle. Depending on your guide, you may learn about the traditional medicinal plants and herbal remedies that the ancient Mayan civilization used for thousands of years.

Once at the drop-in point, you will turn on your head lamp and begin a 1 to 1.5 hour float down the river through the caves and finish at the starting spot.

This trip is good for all different ages and fitness levels, but make sure you have a good tour guide and do not attempt to do this on your own.

We booked this tour through Genie at Coral Divers. From San Pedro, it was about an hour boat ride to Belize City where Genie hooked up with another guide who took us all to Xunantich, lunch and then to the caves. The guide provided some very cool information about local plants on the hike to the caves and we also walked through a couple of small dry caves.

Dropped in and I have to say, it was pretty eerie floating into the darkness of the cave. The headlamps are bright enough to see a little, but it is still awfully dark. A very cool trip until my ass was nearly split in half by a sharp rock below. The rest of the trip down the river was a little terrifying because I thought I was bleeding. Despite that problem, this was an interesting trip and worth it. I would recommend bundling this with another tour on the same day if you are coming from San Pedro. If you don't, it will be something like 2 hours to get there, a max of 2 hours of tour, and another 2 hours back to San Pedro. Most guides will give you a discount if you bundle them too.
