Fairmont Empress Tea Lobby
Steeped in tradition, The Fairmont Empress has been serving Victoria's grandest tradition of Afternoon Tea for over a century. The majestic lobby of this landmark hotel has played host to England's most beloved ritual - the taking of Afternoon Tea to famed celebrities, dignitaries and royalty alike.

Award-winning Pastry Chef D'Oyen Christie works his magic, ensuring an authentic and memorable experience - from your very first sip of our secret Tea at The Empress blend tea, right through to his freshly baked raisin scones served with heavy cream and strawberry preserves.

Served in the relaxing atmosphere of the elegantly restored Tea Lobby, overlooking Victoria's sparkling Inner Harbour, Afternoon Tea is an absolute 'must do' for all who visit Victoria. Reservations are required and should be made direct with the hotel, one to two weeks in advance to avoid disappointment. Tables are held for ten minutes after reservation time.

This is simple a must do when in Victoria. Even if you don't think this is your type of thing, you should try it. Now afternoon tea is expensive. Certainly more than I would have ever thought. But the atmosphere is very nice, the settings are elegant, and the tea itself is outstanding. They say it is the best tea in the world, and I would have to agree. The little sandwiches and desserts are tasty and well portioned. The tables along the windows have excellent views of the harbor.

High tea is it's own thing - overpriced assortment of tea, sandwiches and pastries in a lovey room with nice cutlery and dishes. It reminds me of tea parties from girldom. The Empress serves up excellent sandwiches, scones, heavy cream, preserves, and desserts. The tea was excellent, the service was excellent, the room beautiful, we had a great time!

As we were planning our trip to Victoria, it became clear that we would be going to tea at the Empress. I honestly wasn't looking forward to it much, but agreed to attend. It turned out to be an incredible experience.

To start, the waiter, who gave us impeccable services, sold us on their house blend of tea. I don't drink tea and don't know anything about it, but I do know that this tea is REALLY damn good. We also had champagne drinks.

Then the "lazy Susans" showed up with finger sandwiches on the first tier, scones on the 2nd, and desserts on top. My favorite part was the delicious finger sandwiches and I'll see if I can list them below.

- Smoked salmon pinwheel
- Egg salad on a croissant
- Mango, curry, and chicken
- Mushroom pate and truffle oil
- Carrot, ginger, and cream cheese.

Yes, it is expensive, but it did turn out to be a full meal for us. We left full and pretty wired on sugar, caffeine and a little alcohol for balance. Highly recommended.
