We stayed at the Costa Real a couple of years ago. We picked this hotel because it looked nice and their all-inclusive package was affordable for us. It is located on the northern side of the hotel zone fairly close to downtown. The hotel was very nice and clean, the room was nice and included a kitchenette.

The staff was very friendly, in fact, they paid us back for the money we lost at the airport when someone ripped us off in exchange for booking one of their tours. We were going to go to Chichen Itza anyway so that was very nice of them. There is security at the hotel, who kicked me out of the pool thanks to our drunk wives. Just doing their job.

The hotel has a nice beach bar located on their attractive beach. The all-inclusive deal worked out pretty well as their food turned out to be pretty good. On a couple of occasions it was fantastic. We didn't really take advantage of the free drinks mainly because none of the drinks in their bar had any carbonation (although this was the case pretty much everywhere.) The free beers are served in little glasses which is annoying because you have to get up a lot. Just order 2 at a time and it fixes that problem.

I hated the hotel zone in Cancun. It was way too Americanized, there were too many aggressive vendors everywhere, and too many people. I prefer to get off the beaten path and the only part of this trip that I liked were when we were away from the hotel zone. Having said that, our hotel was not crowded and we pretty much had the pool to ourselves. We also were not hassled by vendors at the hotel. The one exception being an old man with a table doing wood carvings that were very well done (I bought one of a Mayan warrior). He wasn't hassling people and his work was very nice - much better than all of the mass-produced crap you see everywhere in Mexico.

The hotel has a lot of tours to the various attractions in the area and they are reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend this place and would stay there again if I ever went back (which I won't).
