About an hour's trip by boat from La Paz, Espiritu Santo is a long, skinny island about the size of Manhattan. Divided by a shallow canal that houses a very small fishing village, it contains a narrow beach fronted by turquoise waters and is surrounded by smaller islets where colonies of sea lions sun themselves on sea-washed rocks. Affordable boat tours are available from Playa Tecolote to the island and may include snorkeling with sea lions at Los Islotes, a small rock formation north of Espiritu Santo.

We hired a boat tour from Tecolote beach for only about $40 pp. The tour took us out to the island, circled it, dropped us off for snorkeling with sea lions, and included lunch on a private beach. Our tour gude didn't speak much English, but we worked around the barrier and he was very knowledgeable and friendly. On the way out to the island we saw whales, dolphins, sea lions, and jumping rays. Snorkeling with the sea lions was an amazing experience that I would highly recommend. The sea lions are very playful and can be a little aggressive. It is pretty scary at first until you realize that they (probably) aren't going to hurt you. Like our guide said, stay away from the rocks - they will play with you in the water, but get territorial on land. There are other similar tours, but they cost quite a bit more. Would definitely recommend driving out to Tecolote and getting this tour.
