This coastal park has a rock-walled fishpond that blunts the open ocean waves and provides the only safe swimming and the best snorkeling on the eastern shore. The 1-acre beach park, near the mouth of the Wailua River, is named for the Rev. J. M. Lydgate (1854-1922), founder and first pastor of Lihue English Union Church. This is one of the few beaches that has lifeguards and there is also a community built playground.

Not a very interesting beach by my standards. Lydgate State park has a man made pool created by lots of large rocks in the ocean. The pool has some sea life but nothing particulary interesting. This is generally a safe spot for swimming and snorkelling.
