Introduction:
Jackpot is a small, unincorporated Nevada border town that provides a gambling retreat for those living in southern Idaho. This is a destination for those that live nearby, and not the type of place one would typically go out of their way to get to. However, if you find yourself in the area, this is a good place to enjoy the high desert, and of course, gamble. Jackpot is one of the largest employers in southern Idaho.
Geography:
Jackpot is located 1 mile south of the Idaho border on U.S. Highway 93 near Salmon Falls Creek and north of Middle Stack Mountain in the Granite Range of northeast Nevada. It is located just shy of an hour drive south of Twin Falls, Idaho at an elevation of 5,213 ft.
History:
Jackpot was born as the direct result of a crackdown on gambling in Idaho during the 1950's and had humble roots as a log cabin full of slot machines. In 1954, "Cactus Pete" Piersanti and Don French moved their slot machine operations from Idaho and established the town of Jackpot. Piersanti opened Cactus Pete's and French opened The Horseshu. Cactus Pete's management took over the Horseshu in 1964, both of which are now owned by Ameristar. Cactus Pete's is currently the largest property in the town.
Getting There:
Unless you arrange a charter flight to Jackpot's airport, Hayden Field, the only way to get here is to drive or take a bus. There is regular bus service to Cactus Pete's from several Idaho cities including Boise and Twin Falls.
Distances from Jackpot to surrounding cities:

Weather:
When most people think of Nevada's weather, they think of ungodly heat. Jackpot gets little in the way of precipitation, however, is in the high desert which brings cold winters, and large temperature swings from day to night. Below are the current weather conditions and forecast for Jackpot:

Tips/Additional Information:
Jackpot is trying to promote itself as being more than just a gambling destination. It is reported that the Jarbidge Wilderness Area which is located in the mountains to the southwest of Jackpot offers excellent hunting and fishing.
Like West Wendover, Jackpot sets its clocks to Idaho time - an hour later than the rest of Nevada.
