Introduction:
West Wendover is a Nevada border town that offers several casinos and inexpensive getaway packages for those wanting to take a short gambling trip without the crowds of Las Vegas. If you are looking for information about Wendover, Utah, click here.

Geography:
West Wendover is located on the Nevada/Utah border and the city of Wendover is on the Utah side. The towns are about a 2 hour drive from Salt Lake City at an elevation of 4,462 ft. The Bonneville Salt Flats are just over the border in Utah and there are tours available to see them.

History:
The community of Wendover came into existence in 1906 as a railroad town, serving the steam engines of the Western Pacific Railroad, which is now part of the Union Pacific Railroad. At the time, the community boasted a population of around 150 people. Wendover included a train depot, water towers, a round house and other ancillary buildings needed for the operation of an emerging and growing railroad. Wendover became a main stop on this route, which provided service across the Great Basin deserts of Utah and Nevada connecting Salt Lake City to San Francisco. During the early 1900's Wendover was a cross roads for many significant undertaking including arsenic mining 25 miles south of Wendover mainly for the efforts of World War I and the connection of the first transcontinental telephone line connecting the U.S. from east coast to west coast.

The Wendover area saw its first boom in the 1930's and 40's with the introduction of legalized gambling in the State of Nevada.

Wendover continued to grow during WWII when the Army Air Corps built a bomber training base here which is now the airfield used to bring in tourists. The B-29 crews who dropped the atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima trained for their missions here. By 1943, Wendover Field had become the largest military reserve in the world with over 23,000 military personnel, a total of 668 buildings and encompassing over 3.5 million acres of property.

In 1995, portions of the film "Independence Day" starring Will Smith were filmed in Wendover, Utah and West Wendover, Nevada, where the deserts doubled for Imperial Valley and the Wendover Airport doubled for the El Toro and Area 51 exteriors.

Because of its ties with Wendover, Utah, the U.S. Department of Transportation moved West Wendover to the Mountain Time Zone in October 1999, while the rest of Nevada remains in the Pacific Time Zone.

During the mid-2000's the cities discussed annexing Wendover, Utah into Nevada, however, the vote narrowly failed despite endorsements from the State of Utah and the State of Nevada. Proponents argue that it doesn't make sense for the 2 communities to be divided and Wendover, Utah would benefit from the strong tax base derived from gambling that it does not currently enjoy.
