We were in Aitutaki for 3 days and stayed 2 of them at The Maina Sunset (the other was on One Foot Island). This motel is by no means fancy, or even nice, but it was adequate for us and very affordable. The rooms are very clean and have ceiling fans, but no AC or any other frills. It is quiet unless we are there and located across the road from the water, which doesn't really have a beach. The location certainly isn't ideal.
The best part about staying here is that the road heading south from the motel is a very fun (and challenging) scooter ride. This bush trail will take you along the coast through plantations. We did this trip after a good rain and we were covered in mud after riding through there.
Due to a lot of recent press about Aitutaki, a number of new resorts have been built and lodging here is VERY expensive. The Maina Sunset is about the best option if you are on a budget. It is livable for those who don't need the extras and are willing to drive elsewhere to get to the beach.
