Fiji

Officially known as the Republic of The Fiji Islands, Fiji is located in the Melanesia region of the South Pacific approximately 1,300 miles northeast of New Zealand. Its nearest neighbors are Vanuatu to the west, New Caledonia to the southwest, Samoa, Wallis and Futuna to the northeast, and Tonga to the southeast. The country is made of an archipelago of more than 332 islands, of which, more than 100 are permanently inhabited. The majority of the population is located on the islands of Vanua Levu and Viti Levu, the latter being home to the capital of Suva.

The British granted Fiji independence in 1970 after nearly a century of rule. Fiji has become one of the most developed economies in the South Pacific and a popular tourist destination. They have suffered a series of military coups during the last 3 decades and have not had democratic elections since 2006.
